Selecting a January mission focus was difficult. It is hard to see the horrible devastation and hunger in Gaza. After careful vetting, Save the Children was selected.

It is a charity with no ties to governments or churches, has been helping children for over 100 years, and has very good marks by rating agencies. Save the Children was one of the first agencies to deliver food to Gaza.

Humanitarian needs in Gaza are totally unbelievable, but if we can feed just one child, we have blessed that child with survival. Keep the children and workers in your prayers.

One Great Hour of Sharing - $660.00

Why? Because generosity makes a difference. OGHS provides immediate aid and long-term support to people experiencing hunger, thirst, disaster, or crisis around the world.

One example of that caring comes from Honduras. In the “Pass Chain” program, a family receives a pregnant pig, sheep, or cow with teachings of how to care for the animal. When the next piglet, lamb, or calf is born, it is passed on to another family, which will do the same. That improves food security as the family will have a micro business for the production and sale of a meal.

September & October 2020
UCC Disaster Relief

The United Church of Christ reaches out to those affected by natural disasters such as hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, and floods.

Open Arms UCC and Mission

The dictionary offers numerous definitions for mission. Usually the first explains a task undertaken by a person or group for a specific purpose, like disaster relief and rebuilding. – that one the church knows all about!  Another meaning is a definite military operation like a mission to Mars or an action by SWAT or Navy seals.

In a governmental setting, a group is sent to a foreign country to conduct diplomatic or political negotiations as a member of a trade mission, or establish a permanent embassy.  Then there is the business world. A Mission is a pre-established and often self-imposed objective or mission statement for a company.

So, what does mission mean to churches. Most congregations have their own meaning of mission. Lots of churches, especially Evangelical ones, define their mission as spreading the word of Jesus and converting all to Christianity. Other groups claim helping others here and worldwide as their mission.

We at Open Arms United Church of Christ have our idea of mission.  Our mission statement reads:

“With Open Arms, we embrace Christ’s commandments to love
God and to love our neighbor, knowing that all are our neighbors, welcomed and cherished here.”

That means we do spread the Good News of Jesus, and we work to help others.  But, our first mission is to welcome ALL with Open Arms.     That includes the broken, all races, LGBTQ folks, the stinky (as our     pastor Jules says) and YOU. Open Arms UCC is a new church and we hope to build a congregation that is planted on the foundation of    welcome to all.  We plan to grow, become stronger, continuing to preach the gospel, help the needy, and be the church that truly loves and serves all. And we have fun doing that!

We’d love to have you join us on this remarkable journey.

Recent Mission Projects of Open Arms United Church of Christ (UCC)

Shortly after Open Arms began meeting as a new church, there was a terrible explosion and fires in Beirut, Lebanon. Many people were killed and fires raged for days. Working through global partners, Open Arms was proud to send our first mission offering to help the people of Beirut begin a recovery process.

Then came the two hurricanes in Louisiana and the wildfires in California. Working through UCC disaster relief, we send our money and prayers to those areas.

Covid has touched every part of our lives. We were especially moved by the Montgomery Count Women’s Center’s work as they have taken on an extra load of women who are suffering abuse as a result of the pandemic. Those numbers increased by 30 % and we helped their work.

The Star of Hope Mission has a great reputation for helping the homeless populations in Houston. As our Christmas offering, we sent funds to continue their vital ministry. Oh, yes, we ordered a sheep from Church World Service to be sent to a third world country….. got it, sheep, Nativity, Christmas.

As winter brings the chill – especially those living in refugee camps – we bought over 50 blankets through Church World Service for their use. Not just blankets, but big, tough, strong ones used to make a tent, or flooring, shelter, and warmth.

Valentine’s Day found us making 60 baskets for seniors living in a low income housing project.  Needless to say, we put our hearts into that!

You can help with monthly mission projects. Check our website for mailing address.      AND if you have an idea that we might consider as a monthly projects, let us know at: office@openarmsucc.org.

Also we invite you to check out our worship on Facebook and Youtube.  We’d welcome you with Open Arms… virtually, for now.
